FLORENCIA EN EL AMAZONAS

by Daniel Catán

Libretto by Marcela Fuentes-Beráin after Gabriel García Márquez.

In Spanish with English supertitles.

With a nod to Love in the Time of Cholera by Nobel-Prize Winner Gabriel García Márquez, Daniel Catán's Spanish-language opera in two acts takes place on the Amazon river, where passengers on a steamboat are headed to Manaus to hear an opera diva perform. Little do they know, the intensely private diva herself is aboard the ship, hoping to find her lost lover whom she last saw in Manaus before what they thought was a temporary separation: she to an international career, and he to search for a rare butterfly in the jungle.

Upon its premier in 1996, Florencia was the first Spanish-language opera to be commissioned by several major opera houses. Its “journey to transcendent love…with all its intricacies, subtleties, wretchedness, and glorious happiness,” as described by Catán, transports audiences through a sensual world of magical realism.
