THE BUSINESS OF SCREENWRITING

Literary manager Matt Rosen covers the business of screenwriting for dodge students, followed by a Q & A.

WHAT IS A REP AND HOW DO YOU GET ONE?

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO PREPARE YOURSELF FOR THE JOB?

·       What are TV & Film buyers currently looking for?

·       How does TV staffing work and what is it like in a TV writer’s room?

·       How do you best prepare yourself for a general meeting with an executive?

·       What are some things a writer should avoid doing as they start their career?

·       A look at the type of representatives you can get and how to interact with them

Matt Rosen is the co-founder of Grandview Management in Los Angeles, CA.  Founded in 2014, Grandview manages the careers of award winning writers, directors and actors, and has become one of the leading representation firms in the business.  Grandview’s sister production company, Automatik, has produced over 70 films including Damien Chazelle’s LA LA LAND, Cory Finley’s BAD EDUCATION, Alma Har’el’s HONEY BOY, Jeff Nichols’ films TAKE SHELTER as well as genre pictures such as the INSIDIOUS Chapters and the SINISTER series.

Rosen directly manages and develops the careers of writers and directors, including the upcoming GAME OF THRONES: DANCE OF THE DRAGONS showrunner, Ryan Condal; HBO Max’s GOTHAM PD showrunner, Joe Barton; HBO’s PARASITE showrunners, Enzo Mileti and Scott Wilson; OZARK showrunner, Chris Mundy; ATLANTA’s producing director, Hiro Murai; BLACK MIRROR Emmy winner, Will Bridges; Apple’s SERVANT showrunner, Tony Basgallop; IRON MAN writers, Art Marcum & Matt Holloway; BLACK SWAN writer, Mark Heyman; PADDINGTON writer, Jon Croker; ATOMIC BLONDE & 300 writer, Kurt Johnstad; LOUDEST VOICE showrunner, Alex Metcalf; and David Bruckner, the filmmaker of the 2020 Sundance hit, NIGHT HOUSE.

Prior to Grandview, Rosen was an agent at Creative Artists Agency, where he sold the pitch for BRIDGE OF SPIES, directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Hanks, and sold the spec for the franchise NOW YOU SEE ME. He also packaged both the TERMINATOR rights deal with Skydance/Annapurna and OBLIVION, starring Tom Cruise. In 2014, Rosen was named in The Hollywood Reporter’s Next Gen List, which lists the top 35 executives under 35 in Hollywood.
