“The cultural and creative industries … are among the most powerful sources for new development pathways that encourage creativity and innovation in the pursuit of inclusive, equitable and sustainable growth and development”. United Nations Report on Culture.

This interdisciplinary speaker series explores the ways in which the Cultural and Creative Industries (CCI) have enabled women around the globe to be empowered and develop innovative ways to address the challenges they face. The speakers will discuss how they have utilized creativity and cultural forms (including art, film, literature, theater, comics, and photography) to challenge the social order and become leaders and innovators in their fields.

Join us on Thursday, November 10, 2016, 1 p.m. – 2 p.m. in Argyros Forum, Student Union Stage to hear comic book author/illustrator Štěpánka Jislová as part of the Empowering Women Through the Creative Industries Series.

About the speaker:
Ms. Jislová, is a young comic book author/illustrator from Prague. She is currently studying for her master’s degree at the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art, University of West Bohemia in the Czech Republic. Ms. Jislová’s project will explore links between the communities of Prague and those she encounters in Southern California, “The comics story is linked with the theme of the ever-lasting conflict between the need of having a home and yearning of seeing new places. This idea is a basic frame for the many other theme layers that I mean to explore – for example one’s identity and how having home affects us, the process of healing from traumas via changing the surroundings and the social challenges and limitations person’s status offers.
