Holy Guadalupe...Shameful Malinche?
Featuring,
Dr. Nancy Pineda-Madrid
For too long, the symbol of Guadalupe has been interpreted as participating in the female dualism of Guadalupe-Malinche. Guadalupe portrayed as the idealized holy, pure, obedient, and silent model for the Latina, while Malinche was left conjecturing a female representation of a traitorous, duplicitous, loose, and vocal woman. This lecture uses a feminist and decolonial optic to critically analyze how Guadalupe has been interpreted and calls for a fresh theological interpretation of her, one that illuminates a grace-filled understanding of the human person.
Dr. Nancy Pineda-Madrid's family has for generations lived in the Chihuahua desert. She completed a Ph.D. in systematic and philisophical theology. Presently, she is President of the Catholic Theological Society of America (CTSA) and holds the T. Marie Chilton Chair of Catholic Theology at Loyola Marymount University, where she has taught since 2019.
