Dr. Leo Guardado

“Between Memory and Prophecy”

April 11, 2024, 4pm to 5:15 pm with reception to follow

AF 209C

Don’t miss this exciting and timely presentation on Liberation Theology.

Leo Guardado has learned from and worked alongside Liberation Theologian Gustavo Gutiérrez for over ten years. Gutiérrez, now aged, has mentored – and looked to –the youthful and brilliant Guardado as part of the next generation of engaged scholars, practitioners, activists who, collectively, are carrying on the legacy of the groundbreaking and impactful Liberation Theology. Guardado’s presentation, “Between Memory and Prophecy” traces the compelling history of Liberation Theology and considers its future as a potent theological and political force in Latin America and beyond.

Born in El Salvador, Guardado immigrated to the U.S. with his mother when he was a child. Today, he is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Theology at Fordham University; he is also a DePaul Fellow at Institute for Advanced Catholic Studies at USC. Moreover, Guardado’s research considers the theological responses to the violence of forced displacement, focusing specifically on the tradition of church sanctuary. Guardado has recently published (Orbis 2023), Church as Sanctuary: Reconstructing Refuge in an Age of Forced Displacement. He is currently working alongside Gustavo Gutiérrez to complete Gutiérrez’s final book.
