Professor Don Cardinal, Ph.D., joined Chapman in 1998 and served in many roles as faculty, administrator, dean, and director. He was Chair of the Faculty during the historic period when Chapman moved to a Faculty Senate structure, and was the winner of the prestigious Wang-Fradkin Professorship Research Award and twice the recipient of Chapman’s Valerie Scudder Award. He served as Dean for 13 years from 2002-2015, included the launch of Chapman’s first Ph.D. program in Education in 2007, and as the School of Education was renamed the College of Educational Studies in 2008. Dr. Cardinal was Founding Director of the Thompson Policy Institute on Disability (TPI) from 2015-2020, and is recognized by the Office of Research as a member of the Million Dollar Club for external funding while at Chapman. He has authored articles, books, and chapters in areas including evaluation, measurement of quality, teaching methods in special education, and collaboration. As Professor of Education, he has chaired or served on doctoral dissertation committees, and his recent expertise is on disability studies, inclusive education, special education, autism, and disability policy.
