Fowler Engineering Presents- Quantum Engines: From Stochastic Thermodynamics to Quantum Measurement
Speaker- Dr. Andrew Jordan, Professor and Co-Director, Institute of Quantum Studies
Abstract- In the quest for even smaller computing elements, heat management becomes an increasing challenge. From a thermodynamic perspective, heat is an energetic resource that can convert to useful work. In this talk, I will present new kinds of heat engine and refrigerator designs working on quantum principles. Results will be presented on how to maximize power and efficiency, figured of merit that are notoriously poor for conventional thermoelectric devices. These designs will range from mesoscopic electron transport as a working medium, to superconducting systems. I will end with a discussion of futuristic engines, powered solely by the quantum measurement process.
Bio- Prof. Jordan received his B.S. in Physics and Mathematics (1997) from Texas A&M University and his Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics (2002) from the University of California, Santa Barbara, supervised by Prof. Mark Srednicki. He was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Geneva (2002-2005) with Prof. Markus Büttiker, and a research scientist at Texas A&M (2005-2006) with Prof. Marian Scully. He joined the University of Rochester as Assistant Professor of Physics in 2006, was promoted to Associate Professor with Tenure in 2012, and full Professor in 2015. He received the UR Department of Physics and Astronomy's teaching excellence award in 2010. Dr. Jordan joined Chapman University in 2021 as Co-Director of the Institute for Quantum Studies and Professor of Physics. He has been affiliated with IQS since 2012 as an Affiliated Scholar. He received the NSF CAREER award in 2009 and was named a Simons Fellow in theoretical physics for 2017. Prof. Jordan is a member of the American Physical Society and The Optical Society. He became a managing editor for Quantum Studies: Mathematics and Foundations in 2018, and became co-editor in chief in 2019. Prof. Jordan is also a member of the editorial board of Interference: International Review of Science starting in 2019.
