Title: Centering Communities in California Coastal Research and Management
Abstract: Growing support for community engagement in sustainability research is driven by its potential to improve the public relevancy, impact, and of research efforts. Yet there is a real challenge in ensuring that community engagement is truly reflective of collaborative partnerships with shared leadership, bidirectional learning, and knowledge co-creation. This seminar will provide an overview of best practices and emerging hurdles to community-engaged sustainability research, while highlighting two recent case studies - a community-driven research needs assessment of DDT insecticide contamination in the Southern California Bight, and a community effort to make ocean-farmed products more accessible in South Central Los Angeles.
Hors d'oeuvres and refreshments will be available.
