Wednesday, September 14, 2022
12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. PST
Join Schmid College of Science and Technology for its first Science Forum Lecture Series of the Fall Semester!
Our first talk will be given by Dr. Stanley Lo, Dr. Stanley M. Lo is an Associate Teaching Professor of Cell and Developmental Biology and Affiliate Faculty in Mathematics and Science Education at University of California San Diego. His research examines how faculty conceptions of diversity, learning, and teaching inform their instructional practices; explores how student identities intersect with their experiences to create complex opportunities for learning; and develops innovative programs to support student success.
His talk titled 'When active learning fails: Faculty beliefs, student outcomes, and opportunity gaps', follows his research through campus-level data, to further identify conceptions of diversity, assessment, and grading that correlated with reduced opportunities gaps for course grades. Based on these results, we propose a model to understand how and why faculty teach differently and what features of their instructional practices promote student success in an equitable manner.
