The 2021 Southwest Regional Meeting of SICB (SWOB) will be held on Saturday, October 23 at Chapman University in Orange, California. Our aim is to provide an inviting and comfortable atmosphere for students, faculty, and postdocs to discuss research through short talks, posters, and informal discussions.

Plenary Speaker:
Dr. Kakani Katija, Principal Engineer from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute

Kakani Katija completed her bachelor's degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics at the University of Washington in 2004. She furthered her studies, earning a Master's in Aeronautics in 2005 at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and her Doctorate at Caltech in 2010 in Bioengineering. Katija was awarded research fellowships from both the American Society for Engineering Education and the National Science Foundation to conduct graduate research. She was named an Emerging Explorer from the National Geographic Society in 2011 and as part of the award, a research dive in Panama was filmed in 2012 by National Geographic Society. In 2013, she was named a Kavli Research Fellow from the National Academy of Sciences. At the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, she works on DeepPIV, a research tool intended to make conducting experiments in ocean habitats less invasive and improve marine research techniques.

Registration will be from at 8:00-9:00 am outside the Beckman Building and a light breakfast will be available. A boxed lunch will be served outside in the Atallah Piazza. The last session will conclude at 5:30 pm, and a Mexican buffet dinner will be served outside from 5:30-7:00 pm. There are lots of excellent bars and restaurants in downtown Orange, which is within easy walking distance from campus.

We’ll send out a final program to all registrants via email about a week before the meeting along with parking permits and maps and any other last minute information you might need.

Parking:

Parking will be available for free in the Lastinger Parking Structure under the Keck Center for Science and Engineering. The lot is accessible from Walnut St. A map of the Orange Campus can be found here

Child Care:

Parents, if you need help finding care for your child during the conference, please contact Doug and Patricia and we can put you in touch with local caretakers. 

Please know that we welcome children at the conference, that the campus is car free and has lots of space for children to safely run around, and that lactation rooms are available.
