Grow bigger and better: How to improve plant productivity without GMO's.
Plants are constantly challenged by a variety of harsh environmental conditions throughout their life cycle in nature. As a result, they have evolved various adaptation mechanisms to help them survive in these unfavorable environments. Some of these mechanisms include cooperating with the beneficial bacteria found in the soil. In addition, genetic variation or diversity within a plant species is important for its adaptation and ultimately survival. To meet the future food demand of the growing human population over the next three decades without increasing the amount of agricultural land, farmers need to increase crop productivity. In this talk, I will discuss the work that we do in my lab to 1) understand the genetics underlying a number of plant adaptation mechanisms and 2) use the natural plant genetic diversity to develop new crop varieties with higher productivity
