Science Forum Series- Dr. Chris Lowe
Recovery of the white shark population off California and what that means for beach communities
Fisheries protection for white sharks and recovery of marine mammal populations along the Northeast Pacific (NEP) has likely resulted in a recovery of the population. Southern California beaches are thought to be important nursery habitat for juvenile white sharks during summer and fall months. This population recovery and location of nursery habitat use often put young white sharks near beachgoers. In this presentation, Dr. Lowe will discuss what we have learned about juvenile white shark distribution and behavior and will outline future research objectives to evaluate the shark-human interactions.
Dr. Chris Lowe is Professor of Marine Biology at California State University Long Beach and his research focuses on the Physiology and Ecology of Fishes
