The closing of 300 schools. The release of 6,000 teachers and school employees. The displacement of thousands of children. What is happening on this island that 3 million American citizens call home?

The media has moved on to other stories, but the situation has not gotten much better for education, despite the protest efforts of the communities being affected by school closures and layoffs.

Mercedes Martinez, President of the Federation of Puerto Rican Teachers (FMPR), will detail the current events in Puerto Rico and the dire circumstances that schools, their administrators and teachers, and especially the children and their families are still facing in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria.

Speaking engagement presented by Centro Comunitario de Educación, Attallah College of Educational Studies, and cosponsored by the Paulo Freire Democratic Project and the National Conference of Puerto Rican Women, SoCal
