DEATH IS INEVITABLE: DYING WELL IS OPTIONAL

Conversations on living and dying well

Presented by Pacific Hospice and Palliative Care Foundation & Chapman University's Sociology Department and Honors Program

**Chapman Students, Faculty & Staff are free, please present ID at the door**

Each of our lives is unique.  However, there is one thing we all have in common: we do not know the end of our own stories. For many, the topic of death has been off-limits. The time has come to ask ourselves and the medical community the following questions:

  • What can we do to help create a fitting end to our story?
  • How do we best extend compassionate care to those reaching the completion of their lives?
  • Can we create a supportive environment where dignity, comfort and meaning may be found in every lived moment?

Our nation is experiencing a moment of inspired and remarkable cultural change in how we think about and approach the end-of-life. Join us as doctors Shoshana Ungerleider, BJ Miller and Michael Fratkin discuss what it means to live well until the end as we explore the power of our relationship with death and dying. Learn from their unique perspectives, filled with wisdom and knowledge gained from their own lived experiences.

THE EVENING WILL BEGIN WITH A PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT FROM THE FOUNDATION'S "PORTRAITS OF LOVE" PROGRAM

Shoshana Ungerleider, is a physician, philanthropist, filmmaker and speaker. She works as an internist practicing hospital medicine at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco. She received her medical degree from Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, OR and completed residency at California Pacific Medical Center where she is now on the teaching faculty and serves on the Executive Board of the Foundation Board of Trustees.

BJ Miller, MD is a leading voice in reimagining the end of life experience. BJ is a palliative care physician at University of California, San Francisco and former Executive Director of Zen Hospice Project. He is a powerful advocate for the roles of our senses, community, and presence in palliative care as informed by his own unique experience as a patient. His TED Talk, “What Really Matters at the End of Life,” became one of TED’s Top 15 Most Viewed Talks of 2015 and to date has been viewed over 6 million times.

Michael Fratkin, President & Founder of ResolutionCare Network, began creating ResolutionCare Network to build capacity for capable and compassionate palliative care in the rural Northern California community in which he made his home. He has been a transformative and provocative voice for improving the experience of people and families facing the completion of their lives while ensuring that the meaningful professional experiences of those providing care is of equal importance. Furthermore, ResolutionCare Network is revolutionizing healthcare enterprise development as a Certified B Corp launched with a crowdfunding campaign and using technology to connect people to people wherever they are.
