In Desdemona, A Play About A Handkerchief, Paula Vogel takes us on a journey behind the scenes of Shakespeare’s Othello. We meet the female characters of this story in sharp contrast to their original depiction. The tragedy is that each woman struggles alone, using the others as means to an end. There are no innocent victims in the female-dominated room Vogel creates, but outside the door, a palpable and senseless violence awaits. Much like Shakespeare’s Othello, Vogel’s Desdemona is a cautionary tale. Can Desdemona, Emilia, and Bianca forge a trust before it is too late?
